Marilyn Bohm: Sure could have used you when our cement patio was poured many years ago. Now it's got cracks all over it like a jigsaw puzzle :(

That is too bad. Water run-off  between house and patio with add to the freeze thaw cycle. Check on that. Moisture will expand the ground lift drop lift and drop each year. A can a soda will explode in your freezer think about how the ground will expand with moisture moving your patio causing cracks. Preventative measures, experience, and a plan are key. 1 Good base gravel class 5 mix does not hold water draining limits movement 2 Expansion joint from recycled tires last forever allowing patio slab to move free not become wedged with pressure between buildings or objects 3. Control cuts like on a Hershey Chocolate bar are form with function they look good done with purpose to hide hairline crack inside the cuts. Not a jigsaw puzzle ;(  Much more too this is just a brief example. A patio or driveway done well the first time can pay for itself if it still looks good in 30 yrs!
